In the tranquil town of Tasmania, Beverley Goss, affectionately known as “Knitting Nanna Bev,” has become a beacon of generosity and resilience. At 89, Bev continues to defy expectations, using her knitting skills to bring comfort and warmth to those in need. Despite facing numerous health challenges, including cancer, diabetes, macular degeneration, arthritis, and neuropathy in her hands, Bev’s dedication to knitting remains unwavering. Bev’s journey into the world of knitting began at a young age when her aunt taught her the craft at just seven years old. What started as a childhood pastime blossomed into a lifelong passion. Over the years, Bev has crafted hundreds of scarves and hats, often producing two children’s hats daily. These handmade items are not just products of her skill but symbols of her compassion and desire to make a difference.

Inspired by a conversation with her daughter about homelessness, Bev decided to channel her knitting talents into helping others. She began donating her creations to local charities, including the Salvation Army (Salvos), Hobart City Mission, Vinnies, and most recently, Tassie Mums. Her contributions have been substantial, with one notable instance where she delivered 128 knitted items in a single visit. The impact of her donations is immeasurable, providing warmth and comfort to those who need it most. The founder of Tassie Mums, Clair Harris, expressed heartfelt gratitude for Bev’s generosity, stating, “We were thrilled that maker Bev lovingly crafted 97 beanies for those in need. Such dedication and commitment to our community truly warm our hearts.” These donations support approximately 300 children every month, underscoring the significant difference one individual’s efforts can make.

Before dedicating her knitting to charitable causes, Bev primarily created items for her family. A touching moment occurred when her grandson, Adam Godleman, wore a jumper she had knitted for her husband before Adam was born.
